Dear Hornet Families,

This week, Hernando Elementary will celebrate Red Ribbon Week, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of making healthy choices and living a safe, drug-free life. This week provides a wonderful opportunity to talk with our students about taking care of themselves, making positive decisions, and understanding how the choices they make today can impact their future.

At HES, we want our Hornets to understand that being successful means more than just doing well in the classroom. It also means building healthy habits, surrounding ourselves with positive influences, and having the confidence to make good decisions—even when those decisions may not be the easiest ones.

Families play an important role in helping children develop these skills. Take a few moments this week to talk with your child about the importance of making healthy choices, saying no to things that could harm them, and asking a trusted adult for help when they need it. These conversations, even when they seem small, can make a lasting difference.

Be sure to check out our Red Ribbon Week dress-up days and join us in showing our commitment to healthy choices! Let's work together to remind our Hornets that they are valuable, capable, and full of potential.

With Hornet Pride,
Jerrica Alligood
 Principal

Flu Season Reminders

We’re starting to see more flu and flu-like illnesses in our school community.  Here is how we can work together to help keep students and staff healthy and learning:
When to keep your child home:
  • Fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher
  • Persistent cough, sore throat, or body aches
  • Vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours
When it’s okay to return:
  • Fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication
  • Energy and appetite have returned
  • Feeling well enough to participate in regular school activities
How to help at home:
  • Encourage handwashing with soap and water and covering coughs and sneezes with tissue
  • Keep up with healthy sleep and hydration
  • Make sure your contact and medication information is current in your student’s health record (Please update your Focus account if needed and if you have not yet completed your FOCUS account, please do so as soon as possible.  Any questions, please contact your student’s school.  We welcome you to come to your student’s school to complete the process on a school-based computer.)
Thank you for helping us keep our classrooms healthy and our students in school and learning.

Important Reminder about Toys!

Reminder: toys are not permitted at school or on the bus. This includes needohs and other fidgets. When toys are brought to school, they get broken, they distract us from learning, and they cause disruptions between students. We ask you to please leave toys at home where they can be enjoyed in a positive manner.

Hernando Elementary is proud that all of our teachers and administrators who work with our students are certified by the State of Florida or other governing board. We appreciate the following teachers who have volunteered to teach a subject outside of their primary certifications and are currently taking classes or exams to obtain certification in the area they are teaching out of field.
