Dear Hornet Families,

At Hernando Elementary, we believe that every student deserves to feel known, valued, and connected to their school community. That is why we are proud to continue our NEST system!

NEST stands for Nurturing Every Student Together. Through NEST, every student and adult in our school is placed into a multi-grade group with students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Every NEST has a name, color, animal, and character trait. They also have a chant and hand movements to show their NEST pride!

These groups become a special school family where students build relationships with one another, practice important character traits, and learn that they each have an important place in our Hornet community.

Throughout the year, NESTs meet for activities, challenges, celebrations, and conversations. This week, our students had the opportunity to eat lunch with their NEST! We challenged each student to step outside of their usual circle and make a new friend within their NEST. It was a simple challenge with a big purpose—to help students connect with someone they may not normally spend time with and remind them that there is always room for one more friend in our HES family.

Ask your child which NEST they are in! This can start a great conversation about their character trait and how they can represent their NEST with pride.

The acronym NEST stands for Nurturing Every Student Together above eight colorful crests with animals and virtues like Respect, Responsibility, Dignity, Caring, Fairness, Kindness, Determination, and Trustworthy.

Spotlight on NEST

Reminder: Car Tags at Parent Pick-Up

We’ve been in school for 7 weeks, and it’s time to make sure we are all following our dismissal procedures consistently! Please remember to have your car tag clearly displayed at all times during afternoon pick-up. 

If you arrive without a verified 26-27 car tag, you will be asked to park and wait while we verify your identification before your child can be released to you. This may take additional time, so please help us keep dismissal running smoothly by having your car tag ready each afternoon. 

Important Reminder about Toys!

Reminder: toys are not permitted at school or on the bus. This includes needohs and other fidgets. When toys are brought to school, they get broken, they distract us from learning, and they cause disruptions between students. We ask you to please leave toys at home where they can be enjoyed in a positive manner.
