Dear Hornet Families,

One of the questions we often hear from families is, “What can I do at home to help my child academically?” The good news is that supporting your child’s learning doesn’t have to mean adding more homework to their evening or putting them in front of a screen.

Here are a few simple ways to support your child’s learning at home:

Read together. Let your child choose a book, read aloud to them, take turns reading, or simply talk about a story you’ve read together. Ask questions like, “What was the most important part?” or “What do you think will happen next?”
Talk, talk, talk! Ask your child about their day and encourage them to explain their thinking. Have them tell you how they solved a problem, explain something they learned, or use new vocabulary in conversation. Talking builds language, comprehension, and critical-thinking skills!
Include children in everyday activities. Cooking provides opportunities to practice measurement and fractions. Grocery shopping can involve comparing prices and estimating totals. Playing a board game can build counting, strategy, problem-solving, and even social skills.
Be curious together. When your child asks a question, take a moment to wonder about the answer together. Look around, make observations, make predictions, and encourage them to explain why they think something happens.
Encourage writing for real purposes. Have your child help make a grocery list, write a note to a family member, keep a journal, create a comic, or write down instructions for something they know how to do. Writing is all around us!

We know that families want to do everything they can to help their children succeed, and we appreciate that support! Please do not have your child complete additional i-Ready lessons at home. Our students have dedicated time during the school day to work in i-Ready, and we intentionally want to limit the amount of time students spend on the program. Our goal is to make their i-Ready time at school purposeful and productive.

Academic support at home doesn't have to look like more school. The little things you do every day can make a big difference. Thank you for partnering with us to support our Hornets both in the classroom and at home!
