From the Desk of Mrs. Alligood

Dear Hornet Families,

Last week, our Hornets across all grade levels kicked off Unit 1 of Benchmark Advance, our new ELA curriculum, by exploring Life Science! While each grade level is learning about different aspects of living things, all of our students are developing a deeper understanding of the world around them. They are discovering how living things grow and change, what they need to survive, and how they interact with the world around them, all while strengthening the reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills that are at the heart of our ELA instruction.

Over the next two weeks, students will continue exploring their grade-level Life Science topics through engaging texts and activities. One of the things I love about this curriculum is the opportunity for students to learn new content while practicing important literacy skills. They aren't just learning how to read—they are using reading to discover, question, explain, and make sense of the world around them.

So, this week, ask your child: “What did you learn about living things?” You might be surprised by what they can teach you! These simple conversations help extend the learning beyond the classroom and show our students that reading is a powerful way to learn about the world.

With Hornet Pride,
Jerrica Alligood
Principal

We appreciate the following teachers who have volunteered to teach a subject outside of their primary certification and are currently taking classes or exams to obtain certification in the area they are teaching out-of-field.
